For Work and For Play
A Selection of American Neo-Classical Furniture

January 10th - February 10th 2007
Bringing together about forty examples of American Neo-classical furniture at the very highest level, For Work & For Play is a visual exploration of the profusion of small, movable furniture available in America at the beginning of the 19th century. New forms were introduced, foreign design sources were adapted locally, and a wide range of ornament —from simple to complex— complemented the material available in the finest cabinetmaking shops of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore. A range of American-made work tables and desks, card and games tables, and furniture for specific hobbies and entertainments will be shown alongside other select fine and decorative arts of the period.
