John Morra, New Paintings
April 23rd - May 22nd 2009
John Morra has become an eminent figure in the world of contemporary American realism, a field that has established a considerable following among both private collectors and museums across the country. Breaking from the Post-Modernism and abstraction of the last decade, Morra embraces realism and presents us with his own personal variant on the tradition of still-life painting. His carefully composed and imaginative arrangements of ordinary objects—including mixers, bottles, jars, baking ingredients, and books—take on an unexpected and delightful animation, as we are left to ponder the implied “face” of the appliance in Insect Mixer or the anthropomorphic gadgets that seem to march along the canvas of Mertz No. 12.
