Although Jane Peterson usually signed her works, she rarely dated them, and dating on the basis of location is difficult since she returned to favored locales, such as Venice, year after year. Venice was the site of some of Jane Peterson's most remarkable pictures, reminiscent in their subject and style of the tapestried paintings of Maurice Prendergast. In the present picture, Peterson captures a view of a small market along the banks of a Venetian canal.
